Ruisrock, founded in 1970 on Turku's Ruissalo island, is Finland's oldest continuously running rock festival and the second-oldest in Europe after Pinkpop. Its first edition drew around thirty-eight thousand people, and the following year set an attendance record near a hundred thousand, establishing Ruisrock early as a major Nordic music event rather than a small regional gathering.

Ruisrock began in 1970 on the island of Ruissalo in Turku, organized by a student group working with the Turku Music Festival to reach younger audiences with pop and rock programming, and its first edition already drew around thirty-eight thousand attendees, a striking figure for a first-time event anywhere in Europe at the time.
