UTMB Mont-Blanc in Chamonix-Mont-Blanc
Each year, Chamonix becomes the base for UTMB Mont-Blanc, an ultramarathon event week centered on trail races circling Mont Blanc through France, Italy and Switzerland. Founded by Catherine Poletti and Michel Poletti and organized by UTMB Group, the event draws more than 10,000 runners; its flagship race is a single-stage roughly 170-kilometer mountain ultramarathon following the Tour du Mont Blanc route, first held in 2003, with the recent edition running August 25-31.
Each August, the alpine town of Chamonix becomes the center of the international trail running calendar as UTMB Mont-Blanc fills its streets, cable cars, and surrounding mountain trails with runners, crews, and spectators from around the world.
