The story

King of the Bird Renaissance Festival in Le Puy-en-Velay

Le Puy-en-Velay's old town becomes a lived-in Renaissance world each September, built around the historical Roi de l'Oiseau archery tradition. Expect costumed encampments, torchlit parades, Renaissance balls and a closing archery contest that crowns a new king, staged across the town's genuinely medieval streets and volcanic outcrops.

For five days each September, the hilltop old town of Le Puy-en-Velay turns itself into a lived-in sixteenth century, with residents and visiting troupes filling the streets in Renaissance dress for the Fetes Renaissance du Roi de l'Oiseau.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

The festival re-enacts a real Renaissance civic tradition in which the archer who shot down a wooden bird target was crowned Roi de l'Oiseau and granted tax privileges for the year, and the modern event still ends with a live archery final and coronation

02

The mystery stays covered

Each edition adopts a different historical theme, tying costumes, encampments and street theatre to a specific period or figure, from Rabelais to Leonardo da Vinci

03

The city starts moving

The setting is the genuine article: Le Puy-en-Velay's steep old town, built into volcanic rock, is largely unaltered since the period the festival portrays
