Nice Jazz Festival in Nice
The first Nice Jazz Festival, held February 1948 and headlined by Louis Armstrong, is widely credited as the world's first jazz festival, predating Newport by six years. After decades staged in the hillside Arenes de Cimiez following a 1974 relocation, the festival moved back to the central Place Massena in 2011, the same square used in its original 1948 edition, giving visitors historical significance alongside central, walkable accessibility each July.
The first Nice Jazz Festival, held February 22 to 28, 1948, is widely credited as the first jazz festival anywhere in the world, predating Newport by six years and Monterey by a decade, staged in a France still recovering from wartime deprivation and six years without meaningful access to American jazz.
