The story

Festival Coup de Theatre in Institut Francais du Gabon/Libreville

Now in its twelfth edition, Libreville's Festival Coup de Theatre pairs professional Gabonese productions, including new work by playwrights Camille Otogo and Vincent de Paul Nyonda, with a dedicated youth theatre strand drawing school troupes from across Gabon, opened this year by the Institut Francais du Gabon's own artistic director performing the title role in Chaka Zulu.

Domique Douma, the Institut Francais du Gabon's artistic director, returns to the stage himself to open the twelfth edition of the Festival Coup de Theatre, playing the title role in a production of Chaka Zulu inspired by a text by Leopold Sedar Senghor.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Few Gabonese theatre festivals combine professional playwriting with a genuine national youth pipeline the way Coup de Theatre does: school theatre clubs from provincial towns like Moanda share billing with established professional productions rather than being relegated to a separate junior event

02

The mystery stays covered

The festival's artistic director performing the opening production himself, in a Chaka Zulu adaptation drawn from a Leopold Sedar Senghor text, adds a further distinctive touch rarely seen at comparable regional theatre festivals
