The story

CHIO Aachen in Aachen

CHIO Aachen grew from a local riding club founded in 1898 into the largest equestrian sporting event in the world, drawing more than 350,000 visitors annually to the Soers showgrounds. Five disciplines, show jumping, dressage, eventing, carriage driving and vaulting, run across the event's programme, with its show jumping and dressage competitions ranked among the most prestigious in Europe since the first Nations Cup in 1929.

Squires, factory owners, landowners, cattle traders and riding instructors from around Aachen founded the Aachen-Laurensberger Rennverein in 1898 with the modest goal of jointly organising horse races for the region's equestrian-loving population, a local sporting club origin that gives little hint of the event's eventual scale.
