The story

Berlin Marathon in Berlin

Founded in 1974 by Horst Milde with just 286 participants, the Berlin Marathon has grown into the site of more marathon world records, thirteen, than any other race in the world, including Eliud Kipchoge's 2:01:09 in 2022. Since 30 September 1990, days before German reunification, the course has run through the Brandenburg Gate, and with only about 73 metres of elevation gain, it is widely regarded as the fastest of the six World Marathon Majors.

Baker and running enthusiast Horst Milde founded the Berlin Marathon in 1974, staging the first Berlin People's Marathon on 13 October that year on Waldschulallee in front of the Mommsen Stadium, with just two hundred and eighty-six participants; Gunter Hallas and Jutta von Haase won the men's and women's races in times of 2:44:53 and 3:22:01 respectively.
