Summer Breeze Open Air was founded in 1997 by promoter Achim Ostertag, running for a decade at Abtsgmund before relocating in 2007 to Dinkelsbuhl, where it immediately expanded to 25,000 attendees. Now drawing more than 40,000 people annually, it ranks alongside Wacken Open Air and Rock am Ring among Germany's defining heavy metal festivals, held each August near Dinkelsbuhl's well-preserved medieval old town.

Promoter Achim Ostertag founded Summer Breeze Open Air in 1997 at Abtsgmund, where the festival ran for its first decade while growing steadily from an initial audience of around a thousand people.
