Named after Striezel, the old regional word for Stollen fruit-bread, the market now spreads roughly 240 stands across the Altmarkt, combining Dresden's dense low-sugar Stollen with Erzgebirge wooden crafts such as pyramids and nutcracker figures.

Elector Friedrich II of Saxony authorised a one-day meat market on Dresden's Altmarkt square on the Monday before Christmas in 1434, permitting citizens to buy meat after the fasting period of Advent — a narrow, practical origin for what is now recognised as Germany's oldest Christmas market.
