The story

Nature One in Kastellaun

Nature One has run since 1995 at Pydna, a former United States Air Force nuclear missile base near Kastellaun in the Hunsruck, using the same grass-covered concrete bunkers that once housed Cold War-era cruise missiles as stages and dance floors. More than 60,000 attendees gather over four days each summer for a lineup spanning techno, trance and house across roughly twenty stages, including underground bunker floors.

The Pydna site near Kastellaun, in the wooded Hunsruck region, was built and operated as an American military installation, known as Wueschheim Air Station, housing nuclear-capable Matador, Mace and Nike Hercules missiles and later ground-launched cruise missiles under United States Air Force control during the Cold War, its concrete bunkers designed to survive attack while sheltering weapons intended for possible nuclear strikes.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Repurposing a genuine Cold War nuclear missile base, complete with the actual concrete bunkers built to shelter Matador, Mace and Nike Hercules and later cruise missiles, as festival stages and dance floors is a uniquely specific historical setting among European electronic music festivals

02

The mystery stays covered

Its founding in 1995 as, by most accounts, Germany's first major open-air rave gives it a documented claim to being a foundational event in the country's electronic music festival history

03

The city starts moving

Roughly twenty distinct stage areas, including underground bunker floors converted into enclosed dance spaces, offer a physical stage variety unusual among festivals built on open fields alone
