Kiel Week in Kiel
Kiel Week began as a yacht race in 1882 and has grown into the world's largest sailing event, combining races for around five thousand sailors and two thousand boats with a large public festival along the Kiellinie promenade. The nine-day late-June event includes the Windjammerparade of tall ships and draws roughly three million visitors, most there for the shoreside festival rather than the racing itself.
Twenty sailing yachts, one of them Danish, raced from Dusternbrook on the Kiel fjord on 23 June 1882, an event that grew year on year until the press began calling it Kieler Woche, or Kiel Week, by 1894.
