Wave-Gotik-Treffen in Leipzig

Wave-Gotik-Treffen began in 1992 at Leipzig's Eiskeller club, founded by Michael Brunner and Sandro Standhaft after German reunification made independent organising possible, with roots tracing to Walpurgis Night gatherings suppressed under East German law. Held over the four days of Whitsun weekend, it now draws 18,000 to 20,000 attendees across dozens of citywide venues, including a well-known Victorian-styled garden party in Clara-Zetkin-Park.

A gathering for the alternative and gothic-adjacent scene attempted in Potsdam in 1987 drew only a few hundred attendees, held under the constraints of East German law that made such an event technically illegal at the time, and organisers trace the scene's roots further back still to Walpurgis Night gatherings that the GDR authorities had suppressed for not conforming to state expectations.
