Nuremberg's Christkindlesmarkt fills the Hauptmarkt square with red-and-white striped stalls each Advent, opened by a teenage Christkind who delivers a prologue from the Frauenkirche balcony. First documented in 1628, the market is known for Lebkuchen gingerbread, Rostbratwurst sausages and the Zwetschgenmannle prune-figure souvenirs unique to the city.

A teenager in a gold crown and white gown, chosen every two years and known as the Christkind, opens Nuremberg's Christkindlesmarkt each year with a spoken prologue delivered from the balcony of the Frauenkirche overlooking the Hauptmarkt square.
