The story

Rheingau Music Festival in Rheingau region

The Rheingau Musik Festival began with two 1987 concerts at Eberbach Abbey and was formally founded that November by Michael Herrmann and co-founders including Tatiana von Metternich-Winneburg, whose Schloss Johannisberg estate hosted ten of the first season's 19 concerts in 1988. Now spreading around 140 to 160 concerts across more than 40 venues each summer, including wineries, churches, riverboats and vineyard courtyards throughout the Rheingau wine region between Wiesbaden and Lorch.

Two concerts at Eberbach Abbey in the summer of 1987 marked the start of what became the Rheingau Musik Festival, formally established that November when Michael Herrmann and a group of co-founders, including Tatiana von Metternich-Winneburg, Walter Fink and several others, registered the Rheingau Musik Festival e.V.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Founding co-founder Tatiana von Metternich-Winneburg's direct donation of her own family estate, Schloss Johannisberg, as a festival venue from the very first season is a documented, personal founding contribution uncommon among major music festivals

02

The mystery stays covered

Staging concerts specifically inside working wine estates, vineyard courtyards and monastic architecture throughout the Rheingau ties the festival's identity directly to a specific wine-growing region's centuries-old heritage rather than a generic concert-hall circuit

03

The city starts moving

Spreading roughly 140 to 160 concerts across more than 40 venues each summer gives it one of the more geographically dispersed programmes among major European classical festivals
