Taubertal Festival in Rothenburg ob der Tauber
Founded by Volker Hirsch in the mid-1990s with the explicit goal of preserving an intimate live-music atmosphere, the Taubertal Festival is held each August on the Eiswiese meadow directly beneath Rothenburg ob der Tauber's medieval city walls. Attendance has stayed comparatively modest at around 15,000, a deliberate scale reaching its thirtieth anniversary in 2026 while staging contemporary rock and pop against one of Bavaria's best-preserved historic townscapes.
Founder and organiser Volker Hirsch launched the Taubertal Festival in the mid-1990s with a specific goal in mind: creating an atmosphere intimate enough to give the audience a genuine live-music feeling rather than the more distant, corporate scale common at larger German festivals, a founding intent organisers still cite as shaping the event today.
