The story

Hurricane Festival in Scheessel

Hurricane Festival, staged at the Eichenring speedway track in Scheessel, traces to a 1973 rock concert and was relaunched under its current name in 1997, drawing around twenty thousand attendees at its first edition and more than eighty thousand in recent strong years. It runs as a twin festival with Southside Festival near Lake Constance, sharing an almost identical lineup across the same three June days at opposite ends of Germany.

Scheessel's connection to large rock concerts predates the Hurricane Festival by more than two decades: a 1973 event called 'Es rockt in der Heide', or 'It's rocking in the heath', brought performers including Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis and Lou Reed to the same Lower Saxony town, but the tradition lapsed before being revived in 1997 under a new mayor and a new name.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

The twin-festival arrangement with Southside, in which the same headline acts perform an essentially identical lineup at two sites hundreds of kilometres apart on the same three days, is a distinctive structural feature shared by very few festival pairs anywhere

02

The mystery stays covered

The Eichenring's identity as a working speedway racetrack, rather than farmland cleared for the occasion, gives the site existing grandstands and paddock infrastructure repurposed for festival use

03

The city starts moving

A documented history of large rock concerts at the same Scheessel location reaching back to 1973 predates the current festival by more than two decades

Getting around

Stay close enough to the part of Scheessel you will actually use, especially if the event runs late.

What to wear

Sturdy, closed footwear is worth prioritising over festival style, since camping fields and racetrack grounds turn to mud fast in rain; pack layers for large day-to-night temperature swings...

Safety

Hurricane Festival is easier with a small bag, charged phone and group plan that survives poor signal.

Where to stay

Base yourself where the last trip of the day stays easy, especially if Hurricane Festival runs late.
