The story

Wacken Open Air in Wacken

Wacken Open Air was founded in 1990 by Thomas Jensen and Holger Hubner, debuting with barely eight hundred visitors watching an all-German lineup in a gravel pit. Growth was rapid: 1,300 attendees and the first flown-in American band by 1991, a second stage and major international acts like Saxon and Blind Guardian by 1993, and today around eighty-five thousand metalheads from more than eighty countries attending across a 240-hectare site each first weekend of August, earning it the nickname the Mecca of Heavy Metal.

Wacken Open Air was founded in 1990 by two friends, Thomas Jensen and Holger Hubner, who set up a company called Stone Castle Rockpromotions with a simple goal: to build a festival specifically for metal fans in the small Schleswig-Holstein village that gave the event its name.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Few festivals of any genre have grown from as modest a beginning to as globally dominant a position within their genre: Wacken's eight-hundred-visitor 1990 gravel-pit debut has grown into an eighty-five-thousand-attendee event drawing fans from more than eighty countries, widely regarded as the world's largest heavy metal festival anywhere

02

The mystery stays covered

Its trajectory from an entirely German lineup in 1990 to flying in its first American act within a single year, then adding major international names like Saxon and Blind Guardian by its third edition, shows a deliberate, rapid internationalisation strategy rather than gradual organic growth

03

The city starts moving

Carrying the name of the small, otherwise unremarkable village that hosts it gives the festival a distinctly local identity that sits in genuine contrast to its now-massive global scale
