The story

Parookaville in Weeze

Parookaville launched in 2015 at Weeze Airport, a former British air base, drawing 25,000 attendees to its first edition, and has grown into Germany's largest electronic dance music festival, selling out at around 225,000 across three days. The festival builds an entire functioning fictional city on the airport grounds, complete with a town hall, chapel, jail and post office, governed under the mythology of fictional founder Bill Parooka.

Three organisers from Weeze founded Parookaville in 2015, staging a first edition at Weeze Airport, a former British Royal Air Force base in North Rhine-Westphalia, that drew twenty-five thousand attendees over three days with around eighty international DJs across multiple stages.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Constructing a genuinely functioning fictional city, with a working post office, mock-wedding chapel and tattoo studio inside a themed jail, rather than purely decorative stage theming, is a structurally distinctive approach among large EDM festivals

02

The mystery stays covered

Growth from 25,000 attendees at its 2015 founding to a sellout capacity of around 225,000 within roughly a decade marks one of the more dramatic documented growth trajectories among European music festivals

03

The city starts moving

Its site, a former British Royal Air Force base converted into hangar-based stage areas, gives the festival existing large-scale covered infrastructure uncommon among festivals built from scratch on open fields

Getting around

Plan routes around set times, late-night exits, and crowded transport after headline acts.

What to wear

Comfortable festival clothing suited to standing and dancing across a large open-air and hangar-based site; earplugs are worth prioritising given the scale of the sound systems, and a light...

Safety

Parookaville is easier with a small bag, charged phone and group plan that survives poor signal.
