The story

AfroFuture Ghana in Accra

Founded in 2017 as Afrochella by Ghanaian-Americans Abdul Karim Abdullah and Selorm Aggor, AfroFuture stages Afrobeats performances, art and fashion installations and African cuisine in Accra each Detty December, the year-end season when the Ghanaian diaspora traditionally returns home. Rebranded from Afrochella in 2023, it keeps its founding mission of showcasing African artistry on African soil.

AfroFuture began in 2017 under the name Afrochella, founded by two Ghanaian-Americans, Abdul Karim Abdullah and Selorm Aggor, who set out to build a festival celebrating African creativity, music and culture staged directly on African soil rather than in the diaspora cities where similar celebrations more commonly took place.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

AfroFuture's deliberate positioning within Detty December, Accra's specific annual diaspora homecoming season rather than a standalone festival date, ties the event directly to a broader documented cultural and economic phenomenon of Ghanaians and African-descended visitors returning home for the year-end period, giving it a symbolic weight beyond its own music and art programming

02

The mystery stays covered

Its founding premise, built specifically by diaspora Ghanaians to stage African celebration on African soil rather than abroad, also distinguishes it from most Afrobeats festivals held in Europe or North America
