Kundum Festival in Axim/Nzema area
Kundum in Axim traces its own version of the wider Nzema harvest and purification tradition to a hunter, Akpoley, who is said to have learned the festival's dance from forest dwarves. The four-week celebration builds from outskirts rehearsal to a final public performance staged in front of Axim's old fort, giving thanks for harvest and driving out the past year's misfortune.
Axim's Kundum traces its own origin story to a hunter named Akpoley, who according to Nzema oral tradition stumbled upon a circle of dwarves dancing in the forest, learned their movements, and carried the dance back to his own people, who then passed it on to neighboring towns.
