Emancipation Day Ghana in Cape Coast/Assin Manso/Accra
Ghana's Emancipation Day, held annually August 1 at Assin Manso, commemorates the 1998 reburial of two enslaved ancestors, one from Manhattan's African Burial Ground and one from Jamaica, at the historic slave river site known as the River of No Return. A durbar, a visit to the river and wreath-laying at the ancestors' graves anchor the day's programme.
Ghana's national Emancipation Day observance centers on Assin Manso, a site historically known as the place where enslaved Africans took their last bath in fresh water before being marched to the coastal dungeons of Cape Coast and Elmina for shipment across the Atlantic, a role that earned the site the name River of No Return.
