PANAFEST Ghana in Cape Coast/Elmina/Accra

PANAFEST, first staged in 1992 across Cape Coast, Elmina and Accra, grew from a 1980 proposal by playwright Efua Sutherland to build a cultural festival confronting the legacy of the transatlantic slave trade. Held biennially, it combines theatre, music, poetry and chiefs' durbars with tours through the dungeons of UNESCO-listed Elmina and Cape Coast Castles.

PANAFEST, formally the Pan African Historical Theatre Project, grew out of a specific 1980 proposal by the Ghanaian playwright Efua Sutherland, titled Proposal for a Historical Drama Festival in Cape Coast, and was first staged in 1992 across Cape Coast, Elmina and Accra from December 12 to 19, establishing a biennial rhythm that has continued since.
