The story

Damba Festival Damongo in Damongo

Damba Festival Damongo is the Gonja state's own staging of Damba, led by the Yagbonwura at his Jakpa Palace rather than following the Dagbon calendar used at Yendi or Tamale. Prayers, drumming and a procession of Gonja chiefs mark a Gonja-specific thanksgiving observance tied to the year's harvest.

Damongo is the capital of Gonjaland and the seat of the Yagbonwura, the paramount chief who rules over the whole Gonja traditional state, and it is at his Jakpa Palace that the Gonja version of Damba reaches its most senior expression.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

This staging is distinguished by the presence of the Yagbonwura himself, the paramount ruler of the entire Gonja traditional state, presiding at his own Jakpa Palace in Damongo rather than at a Dagbon-controlled site, which gives the Gonja observance its own independent centre of ceremonial gravity separate from Yendi or Tamale

02

The mystery stays covered

Gonja communities frame their Damba explicitly as a thanksgiving occasion tied to the year's yield, layered onto the wider Dagbon-originated Damba tradition, giving it a harvest-gratitude emphasis alongside the usual chieftaincy display
