The story

Bakatue Festival in Elmina

Bakatue, held the first Tuesday of July in Elmina, marks the lifting of a six-week traditional ban on fishing in the Benya Lagoon, documented since at least 1847. The Edinamanhen leads a procession before the chief priest casts a net three times into the lagoon, formally reopening it to the town's fishing community for the new season.

Bakatue takes its name from a Fante phrase meaning the opening of the lagoon, and the festival exists specifically to mark that moment: the lifting of a six-week ban on fishing in Elmina's Benya Lagoon that the Elmina Traditional Council imposes every year as spiritual preparation for the new season.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Bakatue's central ritual, the chief priest casting a net three times into the Benya Lagoon to lift a genuine, currently enforced six-week fishing ban, ties a spiritual thanksgiving ceremony directly to a working fisheries-management practice still followed by Elmina's fishing families rather than a purely symbolic gesture

02

The mystery stays covered

Documentary references to the festival from Dutch colonial administrators as early as 1847, and again under Governor Cornelis Nagtglas in 1860, give Bakatue one of the best-documented continuous festival histories on Ghana's coast, predating most of the country's other annual traditional celebrations by decades
