Apae Festival Wenchi in Wenchi
Apae is Wenchi's local staging of the Apoo tradition, a Bono Region festival shared with nearby Techiman, built around a sanctioned period when grievances, including complaints against the paramount chief, can be voiced publicly without punishment. Alongside the ritualized criticism, expect processions, dancing in raffia and white-clay costume, and family gatherings.
Apoo, known locally in Wenchi as Apae, is one of the few Ghanaian festivals built entirely around the right to publicly criticize authority, including the paramount chief himself, without consequence.
