Aboakyer Festival in Winneba

Aboakyer, held the first Saturday of May by the Effutu people of Winneba, reenacts their ancestors' safe migration under the protection of the god Otu. Two rival Asafo companies compete to catch a live bushbuck bare-handed in a game reserve, with the winning company presenting the animal to the Omanhene, who steps over it three times to complete the sacrifice.

Aboakyer, whose name translates from Fante as hunting for game, marks the Effutu people's account of their ancestors' safe migration from the ancient Sudanic region to their present home in Winneba, a journey credited to the protection of their god Otu.
