The story

Lefkada International Folklore Festival in Lefkada

Lefkada International Folklore Festival began in 1962, founded by Anthonis Tzevelekis, and quickly became genuinely international, inviting dance groups from as far as the Philippines and Uganda within its first few years. More than six hundred groups from nearly 150 countries have performed since, with a communal Syrto circle dance designated the festival's official Dance for Peace and Fraternity among Peoples.

Maria Callas and Aristotle Onassis watched Lefkada's folklore festival from a crowded central square in August 1964, an unlikely audience for a folk-dance festival barely two years old at the time.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Few folklore festivals anywhere can claim Lefkada's specific reach: more than six hundred dance and music groups representing the folklore of nearly one hundred and fifty countries have performed here since 1962, a scale built deliberately from the festival's earliest years, when founder Anthonis Tzevelekis invited groups from the Philippines and Uganda within just three years of starting the event

02

The mystery stays covered

The designation of the Syrto, a traditional Greek circle dance, as the festival's official Dance for Peace and Fraternity among Peoples gives the event a literal, danced expression of its founding mission rather than just a stated goal
