The story

Spetses Mini Marathon in Spetses

An October multi-sport weekend on the car-free island of Spetses, running since 2011, combining 5, 10 and 25-kilometer foot races with 1.5, 3 and 5-kilometer open-water swims across the strait to the mainland village of Kosta, grown by 2018 into an event drawing more than 14,000 people from 42 countries.

Spetses Mini Marathon has run every October since 2011 and grew fast enough that within two years its open-water swimming leg had become the largest event of its kind in Europe by entrant numbers, with more than 600 swimmers taking part by 2013.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

The open-water swim legs cross a genuine strait between an island and the mainland village of Kosta, rather than a closed bay or pool course, giving the event a specific geographic identity tied to Spetses

02

The mystery stays covered

By 2013 its swimming competition had already become the largest open-water event of its kind in Europe by entrant count, a distinction most multi-sport island weekends cannot claim

03

The city starts moving

Spetses's total ban on private cars also means the entire event, competitors, spectators and support logistics, unfolds across a car-free island where horse-drawn carriages remain the alternative transport, a genuinely unusual operating environment for an event of this scale
