Avannaata Qimussersua Dogsled Cultural Race in Qasigiannguit
Greenland's national sled dog championship, established in 1989 and restricted exclusively to native Greenland Dogs, rotating each year between towns above the Arctic Circle in west Greenland, most recently starting in Qasigiannguit, and drawing around 37 mushers with roughly 444 dogs in a race deeply tied to Inuit cultural identity.
Avannaata Qimussersua, meaning roughly the Great Dog Sled of the North, is Greenland's official national sled dog championship, established in 1989 by Greenlandic musher Ole Qvist, whose first race began life as a regional championship for north Greenland before growing into the country's premier dogsled event.
