Tikal Equinox Cultural Observances in Tikal
At each equinox, Tikal draws a mix of Maya spiritual guides performing fire and copal ceremonies at temples aligned to the sunrise, and tourists booking dedicated sunrise tours timed to the same mornings. Guatemala's cultural authorities maintain a formal permit system for spiritual ceremonies inside archaeological parks, but no single, centrally organized festival with a fixed program appears to be documented at Tikal specifically.
Tikal's principal temples were oriented with equinox and solstice sunrises in mind: the eastern staircase of the Great Pyramid complex and several temples across the site line up with the sun's position on these dates, a deliberate feature of Late Classic Maya architecture rather than a coincidence discovered by modern tourism.
