The story

Emancipation Day Guyana in Georgetown

Emancipation Day commemorates 1 August 1838, when full freedom from slavery took effect in Guyana after a four-year transitional apprenticeship period following the 1834 abolition act. The African Cultural and Development Association has run the day's main public commemoration at Georgetown's National Park for more than three decades, opening with a sunrise libation ceremony before drumming, dance, storytelling and fashion parades in African wax-print dress fill the grounds through the day.

On 1 August 1838, full emancipation from slavery took effect in Guyana, four years after the 1834 act had freed only children under six and required adults to serve out a mandatory apprenticeship period under their former enslavers.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

The sunrise libation ceremony honouring ancestors, held before the main programme begins, and the ACDA-organised fashion parades in which families appear together in matching African wax-print outfits are specific, documented elements of this event rather than generic festival features

02

The mystery stays covered

The African Cultural and Development Association has organised the National Park commemoration for more than thirty years, giving it a continuity and institutional identity that distinguishes it from a one-off cultural show

03

The city starts moving

the choice of 1 August rather than the earlier 1834 abolition date reflects the specific historical point at which the apprenticeship system finally ended
