Amerindian Heritage Day Guyana in Multi-city/villages
Amerindian Heritage Day, observed 10 September, marks the date in 1957 when Stephen Campbell became Guyana's first Amerindian member of parliament. Unlike Guyana's public holidays, it is an officially recognised observance rather than a day off work, marked mainly through school and government programming and through the central celebrations held that day in whichever Indigenous village holds that year's rotating national Heritage Village designation.
On 10 September 1957, Stephen Campbell became Guyana's first Amerindian member of parliament, and Indigenous communities began marking that date informally in the years that followed as a day of recognition for Indigenous political representation.
