Sand Creek Rodeo in Sand Creek
Every Easter Monday, the Wapishana ranching village of Sand Creek on the Rupununi River stages a rodeo of bareback bronco and bull riding that grew out of an informal 1980s village pastime into a professional-grade event. Held just after the larger Lethem-based Rupununi Rodeo, it draws visitors for line dancing, ranch-style food such as monkey liver soup and cassava bread, and a Miss Rupununi Rodeo pageant tie-in.
Sand Creek is a Wapishana village on the Rupununi River in the deep south of Region Nine, its economy built on cattle ranching and subsistence farming, and every Easter Monday the village turns its ranching skills into a public rodeo.
