Surama Heritage Day in Surama

Surama's September Amerindian Heritage Day observance in the North Rupununi, Guyana, featuring traditional Makushi dance, craft and storytelling as the village's local expression of the national Amerindian Heritage Month, set against the backdrop of its community-run ecotourism lodge bordering the Iwokrama forest reserve and Burro Burro River.

Roughly 300 Makushi people call Surama home, a village bordered by the Burro Burro River, Surama Mountain and the million-acre Iwokrama Rainforest Reserve in Guyana's North Rupununi, and each September the community joins the country's Amerindian Heritage Month with its own Heritage Day observance of traditional dance, craft display and storytelling.
