The story

Aquin Culture Festival in Aquin

Aquin, whose name derives from the Taino Yaquimo and whose coastline was visited by Columbus's crew in 1494, marks its patronal feast for Saint Thomas Aquinas on June 27 and separately hosts Destination Aquin, an international festival of traditional music and dance organized since 2008 that draws more than a hundred artists from Europe, the Caribbean and North America each spring.

Aquin, a coastal town on Haiti's Tiburon Peninsula in the South department, traces its name to Yaquimo, the Taino name for the area that Christopher Columbus is said to have anchored near in 1494 and that Alonso de Ojeda and Amerigo Vespucci visited on September 5, 1499.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Aquin's cultural programming pairs a traditional Catholic patronal feast with a separately branded international music and dance festival, Destination Aquin, organized since 2008 by the Fondation Aquin Solidarite and drawing over a hundred visiting artists plus conference-debates, film screenings and a volleyball championship

02

The mystery stays covered

The town's own history stretches back to a Taino settlement called Yaquimo, visited by Columbus's crew in 1494 and by Alonso de Ojeda and Amerigo Vespucci in 1499, and Haiti's largest commune by land area still holds the ruins of an old English fort on a river island, giving the festival a backdrop layered with colonial and indigenous history
