On June 24, Miragoane, capital of the Nippes department since 2003 and once home to a Reynolds Metals bauxite operation that left behind a busy deep-water port, celebrates the feast of Saint Jean Baptiste with Mass at its Gothic-style co-cathedral, built with ballast sand shipped from Saint-Malo, France, followed by a town-wide fair.

Miragoane, the capital of Haiti's Nippes department, celebrates its patronal feast of Saint Jean Baptiste every June 24, an occasion centered on the parish church of Saint John the Baptist, built in Gothic style using sand that had arrived as ship's ballast from Saint-Malo, France, and elevated to co-cathedral status as the seat of the Diocese of Nippes when that diocese was created in 2008.
