Cheung Chau Bun Festival in Cheung Chau

Cheung Chau Bun Festival centres on three bamboo bun towers beside Pak Tai Temple, a Piu Sik parade of children in floating costumes, and a competitive tower-climbing race revived in 2005 after a 1978 collapse. Rooted in a Taoist Jiao ritual to ward off plague and pirates, the multi-day event includes a temporary meat-avoidance custom and was recognised on China's national Intangible Cultural Heritage list in 2011.

Three bamboo towers studded with thousands of lucky buns rise beside Pak Tai Temple on Cheung Chau island each spring, giving the Cheung Chau Bun Festival its name and its most photographed image.
