The story

Tai Hang Fire Dragon Dance in Tai Hang

The Tai Hang Fire Dragon Dance began in 1880, when the then-coastal Hakka fishing village performed a dragon dance studded with burning incense to dispel a plague, according to community legend. It has run annually since, inscribed on China's national Intangible Cultural Heritage list in 2011.

The Tai Hang Fire Dragon Dance began in 1880, when Tai Hang was still a coastal Hakka fishing village rather than the inland Causeway Bay neighbourhood it has become through decades of land reclamation.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

The dragon measures 67 metres and is studded with roughly 12,000 burning incense sticks, requiring more than 300 performers to carry, weave and dance through Tai Hang's narrow streets across three consecutive nights beginning on the fourteenth day of the eighth lunar month

02

The mystery stays covered

A smaller LED-lit dragon built for children accompanies the main procession, and the dance was further recognised in 2019 as a National-level Intangible Cultural Heritage Protection Practice Case for its community-based transmission
