Hong Kong's Chinese New Year fireworks display began in 1982 when Jardine Matheson sponsored a show marking its 150th anniversary, reviving public pyrotechnics after a long gap. It now runs each year on the second day of Chinese New Year, launched from barges on Victoria Harbour in front of the Convention and Exhibition Centre.
