The story

Budapest Spring Festival in Budapest

Established in 1981 by tourism official Lengyel Marton and cultural manager Lengyel Kiss Imre, the Budapest Spring Festival runs each late March into early April, bringing together roughly seventy cultural institutions, now coordinated by Budapest Brand Nonprofit Zrt, across venues including Mupa Budapest and the Hungarian State Opera House for around one hundred fifty programs spanning classical music, opera, jazz and dance.

Established in 1981 through the initiative of Lengyel Marton, then deputy head of Hungary's National Tourism Office, working with cultural manager Lengyel Kiss Imre of the Tourism and Propaganda Publishing House, the Budapest Spring Festival is one of Hungary's longest-running cultural events, held every year in late March and early April and bringing together dozens of the city's cultural institutions under a single citywide program.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

The festival's scale as a coordinated citywide program across roughly seventy participating institutions, rather than a single venue or genre, distinguishes it from most Hungarian festivals and gives it a breadth closer to a season-long cultural showcase than a single event

02

The mystery stays covered

Founded in 1981 by tourism official Lengyel Marton working with cultural manager Lengyel Kiss Imre, the festival has outlasted its original organizing structure, now run by Budapest Brand Nonprofit Zrt, a company formed in 2020 from the merger of two prior city tourism and cultural bodies, while keeping the founders' original ambition of using the event to draw international visitors to Budapest each spring
