The story

Szeged Open-Air Festival in Szeged

Hungary's largest open-air theatre stage rises each summer on Szeged's Dom Square, staging opera, drama, and ballet since a 1931 Passion play launched what has run almost continuously since a 1959 revival. Hundreds of technicians and performers assemble the temporary stage and seating fresh each season on the square's bare cobblestones.

Poet Gyula Juhasz first proposed staging theatre on Szeged's Dom Square in 1926, and a trial performance held there in 1930 confirmed what organizers suspected: the arcaded square, framed by the neo-Romanesque Votive Church and a surrounding pantheon of Hungarian notables, carried sound with unusual clarity.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

The stage and seating are built fresh each year directly on Dom Square's cobblestones, framed by the neo-Romanesque Votive Church and an arcade of busts honoring Hungarian historical figures, giving the venue an acoustic quality organizers first tested in 1930

02

The mystery stays covered

Assembling and later dismantling the entire temporary theatre infrastructure requires hundreds of technicians and volunteers each season, a scale of seasonal construction few outdoor theatre festivals anywhere attempt on a public square used for ordinary city life the rest of the year
