The story

Pentecost Heritage Festival Szentendre in Szentendre

Held each Pentecost weekend at the Skanzen open-air museum in Szentendre, founded in 1967 and covering forty-six hectares of relocated historic buildings, the Pentecost Heritage Festival brings together more than fifty tradition-preserving communities and up to four hundred performers for folk music, dance and craft demonstrations centered on the revived queen-walking custom, kiralyne-jaras, closing each day with a mass group csardas.

The Pentecost Heritage Festival, or Punkosdi Orokseg Unnep, is held each year at the Hungarian Open Air Museum, known as Skanzen, in Szentendre, timed to the movable feast of Pentecost, or Whitsun, on the Christian calendar.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

The festival is built around participation from more than fifty distinct tradition-preserving communities and as many as four hundred performers presenting regional variants of the same historic queen-walking custom, positioning it as a living gathering of heritage practitioners rather than a single curated performance for tourists

02

The mystery stays covered

Craft demonstrations have included falconry, traditional gold embroidery, and the distinct Pentecost church-decoration customs of Mendei and Maglod, and both festival days traditionally close with a mass group csardas performed by every participating community together, a recognized element of Hungarian intangible cultural heritage rather than a staged closing number
