Visegrad International Palace Games in Visegrad
Hungary's oldest historical festival, running since 1985 on the second weekend of July, restages the medieval royal congress at Visegrad's palace ruins with over a thousand costumed knights, musicians, and archers from seven countries, led by the same herald since its founding. Many families return year after year specifically to watch the tournament open under his continued leadership.
King Charles Robert of Hungary hosted Bohemian King John of Luxembourg and Polish King Casimir the Third at Visegrad's royal palace in 1335 for a roughly two-month diplomatic summit that secured peace and a Polish-Hungarian alliance, a congress whose memory later gave its name to the modern Visegrad Group of Central European states, whose founding agreement was signed at the same palace ruins in 1991.
