Thjodhatid in Westman Islands

Thjodhatid began in 1874 when bad weather stopped Westman Islanders from sailing to Reykjavik for Iceland's millennial constitution celebrations, so islanders held their own festival in Herjolfsdalur valley instead. Held almost every year since 1901, it now ranks among Iceland's oldest and largest annual festivals, drawing camping crowds and returning former residents each first weekend of August.

Thjodhatid traces its origin to 1874, when Iceland marked one thousand years since its settlement and received its first constitution from Danish king Christian IX, an occasion celebrated with festivities planned in Reykjavik that residents of the Westman Islands intended to join by boat.
