Chapchar Kut in Aizawl

Chapchar Kut is Mizoram's major spring festival, named for the cutting (chap) and drying (char) of bamboo and jungle cleared for jhum cultivation the previous season. Centered on Aizawl, it brings together Mizo communities for the Cheraw bamboo dance, in which dancers step between poles clapped together on the ground, alongside folk dances, games, and feasting.

The word kut simply means festival in Mizo, and Chapchar names the specific agricultural moment it marks: chap, the cutting of jungle and bamboo to clear jhum fields, and char, the weeks in which that felled growth is left to dry before burning.
