Nehru Trophy Boat Race in Alappuzha
The Nehru Trophy Boat Race is Kerala's premier snake boat regatta, rowed on Punnamada Lake in Alappuzha since the 1950s. Chundan vallams, the long, high-prowed wooden boats crewed by oarsmen and stroke-setting singers, race for a silver trophy Jawaharlal Nehru gifted after his own 1952 visit to the backwaters. Held during the Onam season, the race draws boat clubs from across Kerala to compete for the state's most prestigious water-sports honor.
On 22 December 1952, Jawaharlal Nehru travelled by boat from Kottayam to Alappuzha and watched a fleet of chundan vallams race across the backwaters to welcome him.
