The story

Nehru Trophy Boat Race in Alappuzha

The Nehru Trophy Boat Race is Kerala's premier snake boat regatta, rowed on Punnamada Lake in Alappuzha since the 1950s. Chundan vallams, the long, high-prowed wooden boats crewed by oarsmen and stroke-setting singers, race for a silver trophy Jawaharlal Nehru gifted after his own 1952 visit to the backwaters. Held during the Onam season, the race draws boat clubs from across Kerala to compete for the state's most prestigious water-sports honor.

On 22 December 1952, Jawaharlal Nehru travelled by boat from Kottayam to Alappuzha and watched a fleet of chundan vallams race across the backwaters to welcome him.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

What sets this race apart from Kerala's many other snake boat contests is its origin object: a silver cup Nehru commissioned and inscribed by hand after riding in the winning boat in 1952, still competed for under his name

02

The mystery stays covered

The fixed 1,380-metre course on Punnamada Lake, laid out for the formalized 1954 race, has become the benchmark distance for the sport

03

The city starts moving

Village boat clubs prepare their chundan vallams months ahead, drilling crews in the vanchipattu rowing songs that keep dozens of paddlers synchronized, and a win here carries more weight among Kerala's rowing communities than any other race on the backwaters calendar
