Aranmula Boat Race in Aranmula
Aranmula's boat event on the Pamba River is timed to Uthrattathi, the star day just before Thiruvonam, and functions first as an offering to Krishna at the Sree Parthasarathy Temple rather than a competitive sport. Its palliyodams, taller and more ornate than the chundan vallams raced elsewhere in Kerala, are temple boats owned by riverside communities and brought out only for this annual procession.
The Aranmula boat race falls on Uthrattathi, the day of the Uthrattathi star that lands just before Thiruvonam in the Malayalam month of Chingam, and it is first a temple ritual for the Sree Parthasarathy Temple before it is a contest.
