Champakulam's race on the Pamba, timed to the Moolam star in the Malayalam month of Midhunam, is considered the oldest competitive vallam kali in Kerala, tracing to a 1545 legend about installing the Krishna idol at the Ambalappuzha Sree Krishna Temple. Unlike Aranmula's ritual procession upriver, Champakulam runs as a genuine heats-and-final race between chundan vallam crews, opening Kerala's annual boat race season.

Champakulam's boat race on the Pamba River is dated to 1545, when, according to local tradition, the Raja of Chembakasseri had a Krishna idol installed at the Sree Krishna Temple in nearby Ambalappuzha and boats from Champakulam ferried it into place.
