The story

Tansen Music Festival in Gwalior

Tansen Sangeet Samaroh has run since 1924 under the patronage of Gwalior's Scindia rulers, honouring Mian Tansen, the Mughal-era court musician who founded the Gwalior gharana. Held each December in the courtyard of his tomb in Gwalior's Hazira neighbourhood, beside the grave of his guru Muhammad Ghaus, the four-day festival features Hindustani classical vocal and instrumental recitals and confers the national Tansen Samman award.

Tansen Sangeet Samaroh began in 1924 under the patronage of the Scindia rulers of Gwalior, who supported it as a tribute to Mian Tansen, the court musician credited with founding the Gwalior gharana of Hindustani classical music and celebrated as one of the nine jewels of Akbar's court.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

What sets the Tansen Samaroh apart from India's other classical music festivals is its venue: performances take place in the actual tomb courtyard where Tansen is buried, next to the grave of his guru Muhammad Ghaus, rather than at a concert hall or a site merely associated with the musician's life

02

The mystery stays covered

Running since 1924 under Scindia patronage, it is also markedly older than most government-run cultural festivals, having begun as a royal tribute rather than a tourism initiative

03

The city starts moving

Its centrepiece award, the Rashtriya Tansen Samman, is one of Indian classical music's most prestigious lifetime honours, conferred on a single senior artist each year rather than distributed across many performers
