The story

Sangai Festival in Imphal

Sangai Festival is Manipur's state-organized tourism showcase, held for ten days each year from 21 to 30 November across venues in Imphal and at Loktak Lake. Named for the endangered brow-antlered Sangai deer found only at Keibul Lamjao National Park, it brings together handicrafts, cuisine, dance, and indigenous sports from Meitei, Naga, and Kuki-Zo communities under one program.

Keibul Lamjao National Park, a mat of floating vegetation on Loktak Lake, is the only place left where the Sangai, Manipur's brow-antlered deer, survives in the wild, and it is after this endangered animal that the state government named its flagship tourism festival when it launched the event in 2010.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Sangai Festival is named for the Sangai, an endangered brow-antlered deer found only on the floating vegetation of Keibul Lamjao National Park on Loktak Lake, and part of the program is staged at the lake itself

02

The mystery stays covered

Organized by Manipur's tourism department since 2010, it is deliberately pan-community, bringing Meitei, Naga, and Kuki-Zo performers, craftspeople, and indigenous sports including Sagol Kangjei polo onto shared stages rather than centering a single group's ritual
